What does Amazon Best Sellers Rank mean, and how do I see its history?

Part 1

Best Sellers Rank is your sales against the category's, weighted to recent days

• Amazon calculates it from order data. In its words, "sales rank is calculated based on all-time sales of an ASIN/Product where recent sales are weighted more than older sales," and "product reviews are not taken into consideration."¹ A rival with fewer reviews can outrank you on orders alone.
• Rank is relative. Amazon says "sales ranks are relative," so a product with a lot of sales can lose rank when "other products in the same category" also grew.¹ A falling rank can mean the shelf grew faster than you.
• It moves within the day. Amazon updates the best seller lists "every hour," and "it can take up to 12 hours for an order to show the sales rank."¹ One reading is a snapshot, so compare one day against another.
• One listing, 2 ranks. Lao Gan Ma's chili crisp read "#11,326 in Grocery & Gourmet Food" and "#15 in Chili Sauces" on October 21, 2026.² The category rank is the one that compares you with the products a shopper sees beside yours. Variations can share the parent's rank in some stores and rank one by one in others.¹

Part 2

On a real shelf, #1 never moved while Lao Gan Ma swung from #5.5 to #258

Amazon's Chili Sauce category: the category report's example listing, Lao Gan Ma's chili crisp, and the 4 listings ranked #1 to #4 on October 19, 2026. Every number covers the 301 days from December 23, 2025, the first day the report holds a new rank reading for Lao Gan Ma. Each day's rank is the median of that day's readings, so it can land on a half, and a day with no reading carries the last one forward.³

• Momofuku held #1 on 301 of 301 days. Every other listing in the table moved, so the race on this shelf is below #1.
• Lao Gan Ma's rank had a median of #36 and a range of #5.5 to #258. A single reading on any one of those days could have put it near the top 5 or outside the top 250.
• Fewer than 301 days ranked means the report holds no rank for that listing in this category before then, such as a newer listing. Compare rivals over the days they share.

Part 3

See a rival's rank history beside its price and deals

• Amazon's product page shows today's rank only, and the Best Sellers list is "updated frequently."⁴ Neither keeps yesterday.
• The category report reads the top 50 in your listing's category for 365 days, price, price cuts, deals and rank by day, the same report this page's shelf comes from. All visitors share 100 category pulls a Pacific day, so a late pull may wait for the next day.³
• Section 2 charts rank around the dates you pick: the event plus 14 days before and 7 after by default, up to 30 each side. Custom dates stretch it across any part of the 365 days, and the chart's floor sits at #60 or better, so lower ranks rest on it.³
• It can't turn a rank into units. Amazon publishes no table from rank to sales, and the report doesn't estimate one. Your own units are in Seller Central's business reports, covered in the Amazon sales report guide.
