Guide
How to increase Faire sales: the numbers to read every month
Part 1
7 numbers show which of the 3 levers is leaking
Do this first
- Open Shop Analytics and note this month's visits, conversion, order value, sell-through and Faire Direct share.
- Export Orders and count the unique retailers who ordered this month.
- Work out reorder rate: retailers who ordered again within 90 days, divided by retailers who opened.
- Mark the number that fell furthest against last month, and fix that lever first.
| Number | Where it lives | If it's weak |
|---|---|---|
| Retailers ordering | Orders export, count of unique retailers in the month. Faire Direct shows "Ordering Retailers" for your own | A reach problem. Invite your existing stockists by Faire Direct link, and check how many shop visits you get |
| Shop visits | Shop Analytics | Retailers aren't finding you. Look at Products, Performance for which products draw page views2 |
| Conversion rate | Shop Analytics | Retailers look and don't order. Check your first-order minimum and your wholesale price against retail |
| Average order value | Shop Analytics | Orders are small. Add case packs or bundles, and set a reorder minimum lower than the opening one3 |
| Reorder rate | Orders export: retailers who ordered again within 90 days of their first order, divided by retailers who opened | The product isn't selling through in store. See Part 3 |
| Sell-through and returns | Shop Analytics | The leading sign of a reorder problem, so read it before reorders fall |
| Faire Direct share | Shop Analytics, Marketplace against Faire Direct orders | You're paying 15% on retailers you could have brought yourself. See Part 2 |
- Shop Analytics refreshes hourly and shows total sales, orders, average order value, shop visits, conversion, sell-through and returns, and Marketplace against Faire Direct orders.1 It doesn't report a marketplace retailer count or a reorder rate.
- Tactics don't say which problem you have. A brand with plenty of first orders and no reorders inside 90 days has a sell-through problem, and new photos, a lower minimum or more reviews won't fix it.
Part 2
Faire Direct keeps $85.00 more of a $500 opening order
Do this first
- List every stockist you already have, from trade shows, your wholesale page or a rep.
- Send each one your Faire Direct link.
- Choose your payout speed, since processing drops from 3.5% to 1.9% at 60 days.
- Check Faire Direct share in Shop Analytics each month.
| A $500 opening order, paid at 60 days | Marketplace | Faire Direct |
|---|---|---|
| Commission | $75.00 | $0.00 |
| New retailer fee | $10.00 | $0.00 |
| Processing | $9.80 | $9.80 |
| You keep | $405.20 | $490.20 |
- Marketplace orders cost 15% plus a one-time $10 on a new retailer's first order, for brands based in North America.3 Faire Direct is 0%, with only processing.4
- Processing depends on payout speed: 3.5% + $0.30 the next day, 2.4% + $0.30 at 30 days, or 1.9% + $0.30 at 60 days.3 Eligible retailers get 60-day terms either way, so payout speed is your choice alone.
- A retailer qualifies for 0% in 4 cases: its first order came through your Faire Direct link, it ordered from you off Faire in the past 4 years, you invited it within the last 12 months and it responded, or you invited it within the last 3 months, response or not.4
- The marketplace earns its 15% on retailers you couldn't have reached yourself.
Part 3
Reorders are a sell-through problem
Do this first
- Read sell-through in Shop Analytics this month.
- List every store that opened 60 to 90 days ago and hasn't reordered.
- Ask each one what sold and what didn't.
- Offer a shelf card, a lower reorder minimum, and the 2 or 3 items other stores reorder most.
- Reorder rate is the number to fix last and watch first. It can only fall after the first order has had weeks on the shelf, and a store that never reorders usually didn't sell the first one.
- Products, Performance shows orders and units sold by product,2 and the items retailers buy again are the closest read Faire gives of in-store sell-through.
- When a store tells you what sold, put units, stores and weeks into the retail velocity calculator. It ranks each SKU by units per store per week.
Part 4
Put wholesale in the same review as Amazon and Shopify
Do this first
- Add net revenue after commission to your monthly review.
- Add retailers ordering and reorder rate.
- Add Faire Direct share.
- Read DTC's change on its own line before you read the total.
- Wholesale can mask the rest of the month. Faire pays out on a different schedule from Amazon and Shopify, orders arrive in lumps, and one big opening order can carry a quiet month on the consumer side.
- In the illustration, total revenue rises 1.5% while the channel that carries the brand's own customers shrank 15%.
- The monthly business review template has the rest of the page. The profit by channel guide shows how wholesale's margin compares, and the Growth Loop is the method behind both.
