Why Did I Lose the Amazon Buy Box? Five Checks, in Order
The Buy Box flipped and your units went with it. One look at your own listing tells you which of three situations you're in; five checks tell you which lever to pull.
The short version
Roughly 82% of a listing's sales go through the Buy Box, so losing it reads like a sales collapse. Before you touch price, open your listing in a private browser window. If another seller is featured, you were outcompeted on landed price, delivery promise, or account metrics. If the page says See All Buying Options, nobody won: Amazon suppressed the Buy Box because every offer failed its price check. If your offer shows as ineligible, an account health requirement slipped. The five checks below cover all three, in order.
The reflex when the Buy Box disappears is to slash price. Sometimes that works, and sometimes it burns margin on a problem that was never about price: a delivery promise two days slower than the featured seller's, a late shipment rate creeping toward its threshold, or a suppression that price cuts alone won't clear until you understand what triggered it. The fix takes minutes to identify if you check in the right order.
I ran browse and search setup at Amazon as a Vendor Manager and Product Manager, and the pattern I saw repeatedly was sellers treating the Buy Box as a pricing dial when it's a ranked auction with several inputs. Amazon itself describes the Featured Offer as going to competitively priced offers from sellers with strong delivery and a consistently good customer experience (Amazon, 2026). Price is the loudest input. It is rarely the only one that moved.
First, look at the listing: three problems wear the same symptom
Open your listing in a private browser window, so your seller session doesn't color what you see. What the buy area shows sorts you into one of three situations, and each has a different fix.
Eligible and winning are two different questions, and Seller Central answers each in a different place. Eligibility is a gate: a Professional selling plan, an item in new condition for most categories, and healthy account metrics. Winning is a continuous auction among the eligible. To see the gate, open Manage Inventory, click Preferences, and turn on the Featured Offer Eligible column. To see the auction, pull Featured Offer percentage by day in Business Reports, under Detail Page Sales and Traffic. A slow slide there means a rival is edging you out on one input; a cliff means something binary broke.
The five checks, in order
Run these top to bottom. Each one names the number to pull and the threshold that matters.
- Pricing · 2 minutes Landed price against the featured offer. Amazon compares landed price: item price plus shipping. Your item price can match the featured seller's exactly and still lose if your shipping charge pushes the landed total higher. As a working rule, offers within roughly 5% of the lowest qualified landed price stay in rotation; drift past that and your share decays fast (Feedvisor, 2026). Check: your landed price versus the current featured offer and the lowest offer on the listing. Pricing Health, under the Pricing menu, flags every SKU missing the competitive-price bar.
- Operations · 2 minutes Fulfillment method and delivery promise. Delivery speed and certainty weigh heavily, which is why FBA and Seller Fulfilled Prime win so often at equal prices. An FBM offer can absolutely win, but its promise and metrics have to match or beat the FBA competition (Threecolts, 2025). Check: the delivery date your offer shows on the listing versus the featured seller's. If theirs is two days faster, that gap is doing more damage than a fifty-cent price difference.
- Operations · 5 minutes Account health metrics. The thresholds that govern Buy Box standing: order defect rate under 1%, late shipment rate under 4%, pre-fulfillment cancellation rate under 2.5%, valid tracking rate above 95% (Threecolts, 2025). ODR is the one sellers underestimate, because it bundles negative feedback, A-to-z claims, and chargebacks, so a run of unhappy customers degrades your Buy Box position weeks before any warning arrives. Check: the Account Health dashboard. Any metric sitting near its threshold is the quiet way to lose rotation share while your price sits untouched.
- Operations · 1 minute Stock position. An out-of-stock offer can't be featured, full stop (Amazon, 2026), and thin inventory starts eroding your share before the count hits zero. If the Buy Box vanished the same day your units ran low, you already have your answer. Check: sellable units, any recent zero-inventory hours on the ASIN, and your restock date.
- Pricing · the overlooked one Nobody holds it: the suppressed Buy Box. When every offer on a listing looks expensive against the product's own price history or against prices at other retailers, Amazon pulls the buy buttons entirely and shows See All Buying Options. This is the Marketplace Fair Pricing Policy at work, and it punishes the whole listing, including you, even with perfect metrics (Repricer, 2026). Check: the listing's recent price history and your price at other retailers. Bring the landed price back inside those benchmarks; suppression typically clears within 24 to 48 hours.
The slow leak behind many Buy Box losses
Two of the five checks trace straight back to customer sentiment. Negative seller feedback feeds ODR directly. And product reviews drive the returns and complaints that show up later as claims and chargebacks. Sellers watch price hourly and read their reviews quarterly, which is exactly backwards for the Buy Box: the price fix takes a minute, while a sentiment problem compounds for weeks before it surfaces as a slipped metric. Reading every review and mapping each complaint to its root cause is how you catch that leak while it's still cheap. That's the Ratings lever, and it is the one Sentopi runs for you every week.
Score all five levers, not only the one you're chasing
The free read scores your Retail Flywheel from public Amazon data: Operations, Pricing, Assortment, Visibility, and Ratings. Ratings goes deepest, because your reviews are what explain the other four.

The Buy Box sits at the junction of two of the five levers every Amazon brand runs on: Pricing (landed price, suppression benchmarks) and Operations (delivery promise, account health, stock). The full framework, with weekly benchmarks for each lever, is in the growth loop. Reading all five every week is the job Sentopi does for you at $149 per month per product, so nobody on your side has to remember to run it. If your sales dropped and you're unsure the Buy Box is even the cause, start one level up with the sales drop diagnostic: it separates traffic problems from conversion problems before you go lever by lever.
And before you reach for the price cut a second time, price out the alternative. If the real drag on your conversion is a slipping rating, the star rating calculator shows what a higher rating is worth in revenue, which is often the cheaper fix than another round of discounting.
Common questions
How do I check if I'm eligible for the Amazon Buy Box?
In Seller Central, open Manage Inventory, click Preferences, and turn on the Featured Offer Eligible column; it shows eligibility per SKU. Pricing Health, under the Pricing menu, shows the same signal alongside competitive-price flags. Eligibility requires a Professional selling plan, a new-condition item in most categories, and healthy account metrics. Eligible means you can compete; it says nothing about whether you're winning.
Why does my listing say See All Buying Options instead of Add to Cart?
Amazon suppressed the Featured Offer for every seller on the listing, usually because every current offer looks expensive against the product's own price history or against prices at other retailers. Nobody wins it until an offer passes the price check again. Bring your landed price back inside those benchmarks and the Buy Box typically returns within 24 to 48 hours.
Can I win the Buy Box with FBM?
Yes. FBM offers win when their delivery promise and account metrics match or beat the FBA competition, and a meaningfully lower landed price can offset a slower promise. In practice FBA and Seller Fulfilled Prime win more often because delivery speed and certainty carry heavy weight in the ranking.
Why does the Buy Box rotate between sellers?
When several eligible offers sit close together on landed price, delivery, and metrics, Amazon rotates the Featured Offer among them, so a share below 100% is normal on a competitive listing. Track Featured Offer percentage by day in Business Reports: a slow slide means a rival is edging you out on one input, while a cliff means something binary broke, like stock or a metric threshold.
I match the lowest price. Why am I still losing the Buy Box?
Because price is one input among several. Amazon compares landed price, which is item price plus shipping, and then weighs delivery speed, fulfillment reliability, and account health on top. An FBA offer at the same landed price as your FBM offer usually wins on the delivery promise. Check your promise speed and your metrics before cutting price again.
